Our general dental treatments…

When should I bring my child in for their first visit?

It is important your child see a dentist as early as possible, not only so we can track their dental development, but also so we can build a strong and positive relationship with your child. By doing this we can help ensure your child associates dental care with positivity, and will help to ensure they maintain optimal oral health for life.

For this reason we ask you bring your child in to visit us when their first tooth erupts or by their second birthday, whichever comes first. Our dental professionals will then be able to track, assess, diagnose and treat any oral illness and help prevent issues from occurring.

Oral Hygiene

Maintaining optimal oral hygiene is imperative to ensuring the health of your mouth and your body…
With a strong mouth-body connection being constantly proven, it is more important than ever to remember to maintain a good oral hygiene routine. At Teeth@Mittagong we recommend:
  • Brushing your teeth at least twice daily (after breakfast and before sleep) with a soft bristled toothbrush
  • Flossing at least once a day, preferably before sleep – this is so food debris that is caught between your teeth can be removed and does not wreak havoc in the mouth while you sleep
  • Visit our Mittagong dental practice at least every six months – this is so our dentists can assess your dental health and identify any issues before they become problematic
By maintaining a stringent oral health routine, you can help ensure your dental health is optimal and keep your natural teeth for life!

Periodontal Disease

Gum disease is a leading cause for tooth loss in adults, and can cause a wide variety of complications within the body…
With an ever growing mouth-body connection, it is becoming more prevalent that in order to completely take care of your body you must also take care of your smile! Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) is an infection in the gums and the bacteria that causes this has been associated with other issues in the body such as cardiovascular disease, respiratory issues and diabetes.

What are the signs of gum disease?

If left untreated, gum disease can be devastating to your oral health, which is why it is important to have it treated at the very first signs:
  • Bleeding gums after brushing or flossing
  • Swollen, red or tender gums
  • Persistent or chronic bad breath (halitosis)
  • Receding or withdrawing gums
  • Deep pockets in the gum line around the teeth
  • Loose, wobbly or shifting teeth
If you experience any of the above we recommend booking an appointment to see our qualified periodontist, who is specially trained in gum disease and its prevention, diagnosis and treatment. If neglected, periodontal disease can turn to severe periodontitis, which can cause tooth and bone loss!

Fillings

Fillings have been used in dentistry for over 100 years, and help provide structural support to a weakened tooth…
When a tooth is affected by decay and suffers from cavities as a result, fillings are generally used once the decay has been cleaned out in order to provide strength to the weakened tooth structure and prevent any further decay. At Teeth@Mittagong, we use ‘white fillings’ which are composed of composite resin material for a strong, durable and virtually invisible restoration!

The benefits of composite resin fillings…

Modern day composite resin fillings are beneficial for all our patients as they:
  • Can be colour-matched to the exact shade of your tooth, rendering it nearly invisible
  • Are bonded from the inside of your tooth, giving it extra structural support
  • Do not require much removal of natural tooth structure in order to be placed

Child Dental Benefits Schedule

Receive $1000 towards your child’s dental treatment with the new Child Dental Benefits Schedule!
The Australian Government is now assisting around 3.4 million children to improve their dental health via a new Government funded dental scheme—The Child Dental Benefits Schedule, which assists children between the ages of 2 and 17 years of age.
Patients are given $1000 to use on dental treatment over a two year period. The two year period commences at the start of the calendar year, not from the first appointment date.
  • Patients can use their full benefits within the first year if required; however, additional benefits will not be made available in the second year.
  • If you do not use the $1000 benefit within the first year it will roll over to your second year for future use.
  • If you do not use the $1000 in the 2 year time period, any remaining benefits cannot be carried over to the following year.

What is covered by Child Dental Benefits Schedule?

Dental services covered by the Child Dental Benefits Schedule include

Who is eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule and how long does it last?

The new Government Scheme commenced on the 1st January 2014 for all eligible families and is available to children between the ages of 2 and 17 years of age. If you are an eligible family you will receive written notification from the Australian Government from early 2014.
Please bring this to your appointment as this is not a voucher for service. We will check eligibility before commencement of any treatment. Children must be eligible for Medicare and the family must be in receipt of Tax Benefit Part A or receive one of the following Government payments
  • ABSTUDY
  • Youth Allowance
  • Parenting Payment
  • Disability Support Pension
  • Special Benefit
  • Carer Payment
  • Double Orphan Pension
  • Veteran’s Children Education Scheme, if the child is 16 or over
  • Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Education and Training Scheme, if the child is 16 or over
Your child will be eligible for the scheme throughout the entire calendar year. Even if your child is turning 2 or 18 throughout the year they will still be eligible that year, for the full year. If for some reason your family stops receiving any government benefits, your child is still entitled to the Child Benefit Scheme, as long as you received government funding sometime throughout that year.

Will all Dentists accept Child Dental Benefits Schedule patients?

Here at Teeth@Mittagong we accept patients under the Child Benefits Schedule, however, not all dentists will or can see patients under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

Dentists or Dental Specialists in either the public or private dental sectors must hold general or specialist registration as a dentist with the Dental Board of Australia and have a Medicare provider number to be eligible to offer services to Child Dental Benefits Schedule patients.

At Teeth@Mittagong we can also check patient eligibility by contacting Department of Human Services for you and can check if your child has any remaining benefits balance at each appointment.

Can I use my private health insurance with Child Dental Benefits Schedule services?

Unfortunately, patients with private health insurance are unable to claim benefits from both their health fund and the Child Dental Benefits Schedule for the same treatment. However, you can still use private health insurance for other services not covered by Child Dental Benefits Schedule.
If you have been advised that your children are eligible for Child Dental Benefits Schedule, feel free to make an appointment here at Teeth@Mittagong in Mittagong by contacting us today.

Porcelain Veneers

Transform the look of your teeth and smile effectively with porcelain veneers, a cosmetic dentistry treatment available at Teeth @ Mittagong
As a great alternative to prolonged orthodontic treatment, porcelain veneers provide a cosmetic solution to chipped, cracked, broken, discoloured and crooked teeth. Porcelain veneers are made from strong, durable materials. They are long-lasting and flawless in design.

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are essentially thin porcelain shells that are crafted to your unique smile. This cosmetic dentistry treatment is carried out in as little as two separate appointments. See below for more information.

The porcelain veneers treatment process:

Initial Consultation

After discussing the treatment in-depth with one of our experienced dentists and discerning the appropriateness of the treatment, as well as your desires, we will formulate a unique treatment plan for you. This will include how white you want your porcelain veneers to be, the desired shape you want your veneers to exhibit (if you want shorter, longer, wider, thinner teeth), what you want your veneers to cover and more.

Tooth Perpetration

Once all the details have been confirmed, our skilled dentist and support team will remove a thin amount of the tooth enamel on the teeth that are changing. This stage is necessary so that the new porcelain veneers blend in seamlessly with the natural teeth. Without this stage, the veneers may appear bulky.
Once the teeth are prepared, your dentist will send an impression of your teeth to a laboratory where the porcelain veneers will be fabricated and designed to your specific cosmetic desires.

Bonding

Once the porcelain veneers are fabricated, your dentist will carefully bond the veneers one at a time to the teeth. During this stage your cosmetic dentist will take special care to ensure each individual veneer is perfectly suited to your facial structure and smile. Now you are free to share your beautifully rejuvenated smile.

How long do veneers last?

Made of porcelain for its unique ability to be stain resistant and incredibly durable, your veneers will look just like a naturally beautiful smile. With a good oral hygiene routine and a healthy lifestyle, your porcelain veneers should last for around 7 – 10 years.

The many benefits of porcelain veneers…

At our Mittagong dental practice, we are dedicated to helping our patients achieve their perfect smiles, and are able to do this by expertly crafting porcelain veneers to cover and conceal flaws in their natural teeth. Porcelain veneers are one of our most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments because they:
Offer natural looking results – Porcelain is a unique substance that effectively mimics the characteristics of natural tooth enamel.
Are customised to you – At Teeth @ Mittagong we understand that no two smiles are the same, which is why we will take an impression of your smile of which your veneers will be modelled.
Offer a fast solution to orthodontics – When compared with going through painful and tedious orthodontic treatment, porcelain veneers offer a fast and simple solution that offers minimal downtime.
Can correct multiple cosmetic flaws – Since your veneers are specifically designed to you, they can help conceal gaps, discolouration, chips, breakages and even crooked teeth.

Are your teeth discoloured or stained? Teeth @ Mittagong can help you to enhance your smile
Emma Moule
Tooth discolouration can occur for a number of zoom teeth whitening mittagong reasons including (but not limited to) smoking, certain foods and drinks, illnesses, and some medications. There are a huge number of readily accessible, over-the-counter teeth whitening systems, however sometimes these products can have the reverse effect; causing more harm than good!
At Teeth @ Mittagong our dentists have been specially trained to diagnose the source of your tooth discolouration to determine what treatment plan will be more beneficial for you. Did you know damage to the tooth can also cause discolouration? In this case the damage will need to be treated prior to the whitening treatment for optimal results.

Teeth @ Mittagong use ZOOM! Teeth Whitening

Teeth @ Mittagong offers the elite ZOOM! Teeth Whitening procedure, renowned in Australia as one of the best teeth whitening treatments available. ZOOM! Teeth Whitening has the ability to help you brighten your teeth up to 8 shades whiter in a single treatment.
Teeth @ Mittagong understand the daily dilemma of not having enough time in the day to do everything you need to do, so sometimes dental work goes on the backburner. For our patients convenience we offer both in chair and take home whitening kits.

What causes tooth discolouration?

There are numerous reasons teeth staining may occur. Discoloured teeth may be due to genetic, environment or pharmacological reasons, with the most common occurrences being surface stains (affecting the enamel surface of the tooth) or beneath the enamel. If left for long enough surface stains can penetrate the enamel and change the colour of your dentin, as the enamel layer is transparent this can affect the overall appearance. The most common causes for discolouration include:
  • Smoking
  • Red wine
  • Coffee
  • Cola
  • Head and neck radiation and chemotherapy
  • Some infections during pregnancy can affect your infant’s enamel development in later years
  • Mouth rinses containing chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride
  • Amalgam restorations can cast a grey-black colour to teeth

Is teeth whitening safe for my teeth?

As long as you follow the directions carefully, the majority of teeth whitening systems are safe; however some products if used improperly or too frequently may irritate your gums, or cause undue sensitivity.

The safest and most effective way to whiten your teeth is under the supervision or direction of your dentist who will assess your overall oral health prior to treatment.

How long will the treatment last?

With correct maintenance your treatment is designed to last for years, however results may be compromised by a relapse into old eating habits, smoking, or medication.

What is the maintenance after my treatment?

Your dental professional will instruct you on the best before and after care for your treatment. There are several options to maintain your new smile including: ZOOM! Daywhite touch-up take-home whitening, ZOOM! whitening pen, and the Sonicare DiamondClean electric toothbrush.

Dental Implants

Laugh, eat and speak comfortably with the help of dental implants from Teeth @ Mittagong west of Wollongong
Loose, wobbly dentures can become cumbersome. Dental implants offer a more stable, long-term solution to singular, multiple or even total tooth loss. Dental implants can help to renew your smile and the best thing is – they look and function like natural teeth!
Dental Implants at Teeth@Mittagong

What are dental implants?

Essentially a dental implant is a tiny biocompatible dental implants Mittagong titanium screw that replaces the tooth’s root. Once the dental implant has healed in the jaw, the implant can be fitted with a restoration depending on your needs. If you only need to replace one tooth for example, the dental implant can be fitted with a single crown. Where multiple teeth need replacing, a bridge or a denture can be fitted.

The dental implant procedure

During the treatment procedure, the dental implant is inserted directly into your jawbone material at the site of tooth loss.

After a period of months your dental implant will fuse with the underlying jawbone and heal, providing a strong and durable tooth root alternative.
This process is known as osseointegration and it gives the restoration stability, strength and support.

Once your dentist is satisfied with the healing process, the crown, bridge or implant overdenture is then placed over the implant to complete your smile.

Are dental implants safe?

In terms of the materials used, dental implants are made from the same materials that are used to reinforce bones when they fracture. Dental implants are biocompatible which means that the human body is known to accept the treatment as if the titanium rod was a natural tooth or bone. This titanium based metal used for dental implant treatments has been used in medicine for many years.

The process of integration known as osseointegration, was introduced in Australia in 1981 and is continually being studied and tested by dentists, doctors and scientists all over the world. Although further testing is necessary, evidence suggests that the treatment is safe and highly effective for replacing teeth and restoring functionality and aesthetics for suitable patients.

Root Canal Therapy

With modern technology and dental techniques, your root canal therapy should cause no more discomfort than that of a regular filling…
Root canal therapy is used as a last resort before the extraction of a tooth. When a tooth become infected traditionally it would need to be extracted, however with modern technology and advancements in dental care, at Teeth@Mittagong we are able to save your tooth with the help of a root canal.

What does a root canal treatment involve?

When a tooth is infected, it is important to remove the soft tissue inside the tooth (also known as the ‘pulp’) before the infection spreads. By utilising root canal therapy, we are able to effectively clean out the infected or decayed tissue inside the tooth, and if necessary restore its strength with a dental crown. By doing this we are not only able to save your tooth from extraction, we also remove all infected tissue and ensure your tooth’s structural integrity with a dental crown.
To find out more about our root canal therapy or to book a consultation at our Mittagong dental practice, please contact us.

Crowns and Bridges

Dental crowns are generally used to support and protect the structural integrity of a tooth…
At Teeth@Mittagong we utilise porcelain crowns for many of our dental restorations. When a tooth has been weakened by decay, a root canal procedure or needs some extra support, a dental crown is the optimal solution to these issues. Porcelain is a strong material that is durable, stain resistant and long-lasting – best of all, it can be colour-matched to your teeth so it is virtually invisible!

Bridges are a great solution to tooth loss…

If you have lost one or multiple teeth, at Teeth@Mittagong we are able to utilise dental bridges to effectively ‘bridge the gap’ caused by a missing tooth. This is important as missing teeth can cause teeth to shift in an attempt to fill the void, resulting in uneven, misaligned or crooked teeth.

What is a bridge?

A bridge is a dental restoration that utilises three dental crowns that have been fused together to form one dental appliance. The two end crowns are then placed over the teeth sitting adjacent to the site of tooth loss in order to effectively restore your smile.
To find out more about our crowns and bridges or to book a consultation at our Mittagong dental practice, please contact us.

TMJ

Do you suffer from chronic headaches or jaw pain? You may be suffering from TMD…
TMD, an acronym for Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction, is a condition that affects the joints (or ‘hinges’) of your jaws. These Temporomandibular Joints (known as TMJ) are located just in front of the ear, and when not performing properly they can cause:
  • Constant headaches
  • Pain or tenderness in the face, neck or shoulders
  • Limited ability to open the mouth
  • Jaws that lock
  • A loud clicking, popping or grating noise when opening or closing the mouth
  • Mild swelling on the side of the face
If you suffer from one or more of the above symptoms, call our Mittagong dental practice for a consultation, as your ‘medical’ issue could actually have a dental solution!

What causes TMD?

TMD can be caused by a wide range of issues such as bruxism (constant tooth grinding), stress or a dislocation of the jaw. Our dental professionals can help assess and diagnose the source of your discomfort in order to recommend the appropriate treatment to solve and relieve your TMD.
